Apple in November 2019 replaced the 15-inch MacBook Pro with a new 16-inch model, just a few months after updating the 13 and 15-inch MacBook Pro models in May and July 2019.
The new 16-inch MacBook Pro features a larger 16-inch Retina display, thinner bezels, an updated keyboard with a scissor mechanism instead of a butterfly mechanism, up to 64 GB of RAM, up to 8 TB of storage and graphics AMD Radeon Pro 5000M Series cards
Apple continues to sell existing 13-inch MacBook Pro models that were updated earlier this year, so the line now consists of the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the 16-inch MacBook Pro, with the 15-inch MacBook Pro Withdrawn and no longer available for sale from Apple. The new 16-inch MacBook Pro has a resolution of 3072x1920 and a higher pixel density of 226 ppi.
The Touch Bar and Retina display of all MacBook Pro models have support for True Tone functionality that adjusts the white balance to match the ambient lighting, and other display features are included, such as the wide support of color.
The machines use the eighth and ninth generation Intel processors, and are Apple's fastest MacBook Pro models to date. The 16-inch MacBook Pro features the same processors introduced in the May 15-inch MacBook Pro update, with an 8-core option available at the top end.
The 16-inch MacBook Pro models use 9 or 6 or 8-core generation chips, while the 13-inch MacBook Pro models are equipped with eighth-generation quad-core chips. Apple says the 16-inch MacBook Pro uses the "most advanced thermal architecture that has ever existed on a Mac laptop," which allows it to run at higher power for longer periods of time.
There is a new fan design with a larger impeller, extended blades and larger vents, which increases air flow by 28 percent. The heat sink is also 35 percent larger, allowing for greater heat dissipation. In general, this allows the MacBook Pro to hold up to 12 watts more during intensive workloads compared to the previous 15-inch MacBook Pro.
The 13-inch MacBook Pro continues to feature an improved butterfly mechanism that is designed to reduce key failures, but the new 16-inch MacBook Pro has a new Magic Keyboard.
The Magic Keyboard uses a refined scissor mechanism that is expected to be more reliable than the butterfly keyboard that is prone to failure. The keyboard offers up to 1 mm of key travel and features a "more responsive key press". V
As for the design, Apple has updated the Magic Keyboard to include a physical escape key instead of the virtual key on the touch bar, along with a touch identification button and an inverted "T" arrangement for the arrow keys. Like the 13-inch MacBook Pro, it continues to offer a touch bar.
There is also a new six-speaker sound system on the 16-inch MacBook Pro that is designed to offer the most advanced audio experience on a laptop. The sounds are clearer and more natural than ever, and the bass is half an octave deeper. There is also an updated high performance microphone with a 40 percent reduction in whistle and a better signal / noise ratio. The 13-inch MacBook Pro uses stereo speakers with two microphones.
The 13-inch MacBook Pro machines feature Intel Iris Plus 645 and 655 graphics, while the 16-inch models are equipped with integrated graphics and Radeon Pro 5300M graphics or Radeon Pro 5500M graphics. Up to 8 TB of SSD storage is available on the 16-inch machine, while the 13-inch machine can support a 2-TB SSD.
The AMD Radeon 5000M series graphics on the 16-inch MacBook Pro offer the first 7 nm mobile discrete GPUs designed for professional users. The standard configuration offers graphical performance up to 2.1 times faster than the previous configuration, and the high-end graphics options offer 80 percent faster performance.
Up to 64 GB of RAM are available on the 16-inch MacBook Pro, while the 13-inch model reaches a maximum of 16 GB. The basic 13-inch MacBook Pro offers two Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C ports, while the high-end 13-inch models and all 16-inch models feature four Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C ports.
A T2 chip continues to offer enhanced security with secure boot and encrypted storage on the go along with support for Hey Siri hands-free commands. You can buy the new MacBook Pro models in silver or space gray. Bluetooth 5.0, 802.11ac WiFi and a 720p FaceTime HD camera are other features included.
The price on the 13-inch MacBook Pro starts at $ 1,299 for a 1.4GHz quad-core Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM and a 128GB SSD, while the mid-level 13-inch MacBook Pro model features a Core i5 processor at 2.4GHz, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD for $ 1,799. The price on the 16-inch MacBook Pro starts at $ 2,399 for a 2.6GHz Core i7 processor, Radeon Pro 5300M, 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD. Custom configuration options are available for an additional price.
